The crystallographic structural analysis of the magnetite of a steatite rock at 298 K, (saturation magnetization, σ = 95.0 J T-1 kg-1) showed two cubic networks and, below Verwey temperature (TV ca.120 K) a monoclinic structure, basing on their cell dimensions and different transitional behaviors when reducing the temperature. The average chemical formula of this almost stoichiometric magnetite was deduced from the chemical analysis, 298 K-Mössbauer and the structural refinement. The Rietveld fitting of the 298 K X-ray pattern is Fe 3 + Fe 0 . 95 3 + Fe 0 . 88 2 + Cr 0 . 04 3 + Al 0 . 04 3 + Mg 0 . 05 2 + Ni 0 . 02 2 + ⊗ 0 . 02 O 4, where [ ] and { } stand for cations in tetrahedral and octahedral coordination symmetries, respectively. The crystallographic structure below TV in this magnetite was observed from synchrotron X-ray diffraction data (XRD), collected at 15 K. It was identified three structures: two cubic (space group, Fd3m), with significantly different lattice parameters, and one monoclinic (P2/c).

RESUMO O presente estudo objetivou aplicar o Simple Algorithm For Evapotranspiration Retrieving (SAFER) juntamente com imagens MODIS e dados meteorológicos para analisar a evapotranspiração (ET) e a produção de biomassa (BIO) de acordo com classes indicativas de degradação das pastagens na bacia hidrográfica do Alto Tocantins. Classes indicativas de pastagens degradadas foram obtidas a partir de série temporal de NDVI (2002 a 2012). Para estimar a ET e a BIO em cada classe, imagens MODIS e dados de estações meteorológicas do ano de 2012 foram utilizados. Os resultados indicam que, em relação às pastagens não degradadas, a ET e a BIO apresentaram diferenças, principalmente no período de estresse hídrico, nas pastagens com indicativo de degradação moderado e forte. Assim, alterações na partição do balanço de energia podem ocorrer de acordo com os níveis de degradação, haja vista que indicativos de processos de degradação foram identificados em 24% das áreas de pastagens plantadas. Nesse contexto, as estimativas de ET e BIO por meio de técnicas de sensoriamento remoto pode ser um bom indicador da disponibilidade de forragem e, consequentemente, de aspectos relacionados à degradação das pastagens em larga escala. Espera-se que esse conhecimento possa contribuir para iniciativas de políticas públicas voltadas para o controle da perda do potencial produtivo das áreas de pastagens na bacia do Alto Tocantins, Estado de Goiás.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to apply the Simple Algorithm For Evapotranspiration Retrieving (SAFER) with MODIS images together with meteorological data to analyze evapotranspiration (ET) and biomass production (BIO) according to indicative classes of pasture degradation in Upper Tocantins River Basin. Indicative classes of degraded pastures were obtained from the NDVI time-series (2002-2012). To estimate ET and BIO in each class, MODIS images and data from meteorological stations of the year 2012 were used. The results show that compared to not-degraded pastures, ET and BIO were different in pastures with moderate to strong degradation, mainly during water stress period. Therefore, changes in energy balance partition may occur according to the degradation levels, considering that those indicatives of degradation processes were identified in 24% of the planted pasture areas. In this context, ET and BIO estimates using remote sensing techniques can be a reliable indicator of forage availability, and large-scale aspects related to the degradation of pastures. It is expected that this knowledge may contribute to initiatives of public policies aimed at controlling the loss of production potential of pasture areas in the Upper Tocantins River Basin in the state of Goiás, Brazil.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar a estrutura de dependência espacial de atributos do solo e sua interferência na produção de biomassa epígea de pastagem de capim‑marandu (Urochloa brizantha). Amostras de Latossolo Vermelho‑Amarelo foram coletadas em rede de pontos georreferenciados, para a determinação de atributos físicos e químicos do solo e da produção de biomassa epígea da pastagem, no verão e outono de 2010/2011. Verificou-se dependência espacial das variáveis, por meio de análise geoestatística com construção e ajuste de semivariogramas, interpolação por krigagem ordinária e espacialização em mapas de isolinhas. A dependência espacial ocorreu para alguns atributos físicos e químicos do solo (areia, densidade, resistência à penetração, infiltração, pH, MO, P, K, Ca, Mg, H+Al, Al, CTC e V), e para a biomassa da pastagem medida nas estações verão e outono. A análise espacial de atributos físicos do solo permite identificar áreas degradadas da pastagem. A biomassa da pastagem é mais influenciada pelos atributos físicos do solo do que pelos químicos.

The objective of this work was to identify the spatial structure dependence of soil attributes and its interference on the production of epigeal biomass of Urochloa brizantha. A Typic Hapludox was sampled at geocoded grid points in order to determine soil physical and chemical properties and the epigeal biomass production of pasture during the summer and fall seasons of 2010/2011. Spatial dependence of variables was verified by geostatistical analysis using construction and adjustment of semivariograms, ordinary kriging interpolation, and spatial maps. Spatial dependence occurred for some physical and chemical soil properties (sand, density, penetration resistance, infiltration, pH, MO, P, K, Ca, Mg, H+Al, Al, CEC, and base saturation), and for pasture biomass measured in the summer and fall seasons. Spatial analysis of soil physical attributes allows identifying areas with the highest pasture degradation. Biomass pasture is more influenced by the soil physical attributes than by the chemical ones.

This study investigated the microbial metabolism in Bermuda-grass Tifton 85 areas after potable-water and effluent irrigation treatments. The experiment was carried out in Lins/SP with samples taken in the rainy and dry seasons (2006) after one year and three years of irrigation management, and set up on an entirely randomized block design with four treatments: C (control, without irrigation or fertilization), PW (potable water + 520 kg of N ha-1 year-1); TE3 and TE0 (treated effluent + 520 kg of N ha-1 year-1) for three years and one year, respectively. The parameters determined were: microbial biomass carbon, microbial activity, and metabolic quotient. Irrigation with wastewater after three years indicated no alteration in soil quality for C and ET3; for PW, a negative impact on soil quality (microbial biomass decrease) suggested that water-potable irrigation in Lins is not an adequate option. Microbial activity alterations observed in TE0 characterize a priming effect.

Os efeitos deletérios do excesso de peso sobre a saúde dos cães são bastante citados na literatura, mas pouco investigados. O termo hiperlipidemia refere-se ao aumento da concentração de lipídeos (colesterol, triglicérides ou ambos) séricos. As desordens lipídicas são relativamente comuns nos cães e essas condições podem ocorrer como resultado de um defeito primário no metabolismo de lipoproteínas ou como consequência de doença sistêmica subjacente. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a frequência de animais obesos que apresentam alterações nas concentrações de lipídios séricos e analisar a possível correspondência dessa condição com grau de obesidade, sexo, idade e castração. Foram incluídos 30 cães obesos com escore de condição corporal (ECC) igual ou superior a 8 (em escala de um a nove, com nove representando obesidade acentuada) e um grupo controle de dez animais com ECC igual a cinco. Nos animais com ECC 9 (n=21), foi encontrada frequência de 52,4% (n=11) de cães com hipercolesterolemia e 33,3% (n=7) com hipertrigliceridemia. Nos animais com EEC 8 (n=9), foi encontrada frequência de 22,2% (n=2) de hipercolesterolemia e de 33,3% (n=3) de hipertrigliceridemia. Essas alterações também apresentaram correspondência com o sexo feminino, faixa etária entre quatro e sete anos e a castração. Todavia, a elevação desses metabólitos foi moderada e não se situou em faixa de reconhecido risco à saúde.

The harmful effects of obesity on dog health are quite mentioned in the literature, but little investigated. The term hyperlipidemia refers to the increase of lipid and/or fat concentration (cholesterol, triglycerides or both) in serum. These disorders are relatively common in dogs and may happen as a result of a primary defect in metabolism of lipoproteins or as a consequence of a subjacent systemic disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of obese dogs that present alterations on cholesterol and triglycerides serum concentration, and to study the correlation of these disorders with obesity degree, sex, age and castration. Thirty obese dogs with body condition score (BCS) equal or superior to 8 (on a scale between one to nine, and nine representing severe obesity) and a control group of ten dogs with BCS 5 were included. Animals with BCS 9 (n=21 dogs) presented a frequency of 52.4% (n=11 dogs) of hypercholesterolemia and 33.3% (n=7) of hypertriglyceridemia. Dogs with BCS 8 (n=9) presented a frequency of 22,2% (n=2) of hypercholesterolemia and 33,3% (n=3) of hypertriglyceridemia. These alterations also presented correspondence with female sex, age between 4 and 7 years and castration. However, the cholesterol and triglycerides increases were moderate, and not remained within the range of recognized health risk.

Os transtornos da pele e dos pelos são parte importante na prática clínica de pequenos animais. Numerosos fatores nutricionais afetam a homeostase, a qualidade e o aspecto da pelagem. As vitaminas do complexo B incluem compostos hidrossolúveis necessários como coenzimas em diversas funções celulares envolvidas no metabolismo energético e na síntese tecidual. A biotina, em especial, é necessária nas reações de carboxilação, participando da síntese de ácidos graxos, aminoácidos e purinas pelo tecido epitelial. Uma cadela com quadro de cistite recorrente e tumor venéreo transmissível foi tratada com antibioticoterapia prolongada e quimioterapia. Após alguns meses de tratamento, foram observadas lesões no plano nasal e nos coxins plantar e palmar, caracterizadas por hiperceratose, espessamento, fissuras, sangramento e inflamação. O paciente recebeu suplementação de 15mg de biotina por via oral (equivalente a 1,4mg kg-1 de peso corporal), uma vez por dia, durante 60 dias, havendo importante regressão das lesões. Sugere-se que, sob antibioticoterapia e doença, a síntese intestinal de biotina possa não ter sido suficiente, sendo necessária sua suplementação.

Skin and hair diseases are an important part in small animal's clinical practice. Many nutritional factors can affect the quality and the aspect of the coat. B complex vitamins are water-soluble compounds used as coenzymes in several cellular functions that are involved in energy metabolism and tissue synthesis. Biotin, in particular, is necessary for carboxylation reactions, fatty acids synthesis, and incorporation of essential amino acids and purines in the epithelial tissue. A female canine with recurrent cystitis and sticker tumor was treated chemotherapy and prolonged antibiotic therapy. After a few months of medications, lesions were observed in nasal plan and palmar and plantar pads, characterized by hyperkeratosis, skin thickness, bleeding fissures, and inflammation. The patient was treated with 15mg of oral biotin supplementation (1.4mg kg-1 of body weight) once a day, for 60 days, with significant regression of skin lesions at the end of this period. These findings suggest that in certain diseases and particularly in prolonged antibiotics therapy, intestinal biotin synthesis may not be adequate, demanding oral supplementation.

psyllium (Plantago psyllium) é um vegetal comumente utilizado como adjuvante no tratamento de afecções que resultam em constipação. Com o objetivo de melhor compreender os efeitos dessa fibra em cães, foram realizados dois experimentos. O primeiro avaliou, em cães sadios, inclusões de 0%, 2% e 4% de semente integral moída de psyllium à dieta (com base na matéria natural). Para tanto, foram empregados oito cães da raça Beagles adultos, os quais receberam as dietas experimentais por oito dias. Verificou-se aumento linear da umidade das fezes com a adição de teores crescentes de psyllium (R²=0,54 e P=0,0012), sem alteração do escore fecal e número de defecações por dia. O segundo experimento incluiu avaliação da opinião de 24 proprietários cujos cães receberam suplementação de 2% de psyllium como parte do tratamento de afecções que causaram constipação. Dos proprietários incluídos, 19 (79,2%) relataram melhora da defecação de seus cães durante a administração da fibra. Quinze (62,5%) observaram que as fezes dos animais, antes ressecadas ou endurecidas, tornaram-se normais ou pastosas. Os resultados comprovaram para cães os efeitos laxativos do psyllium já descritos na medicina humana, indicando seu uso no tratamento de suporte de enfermidades que levam à constipação.

psyllium (Plantago psyllium) is a fiber generally used as a supplement in the treatment of diseases that led to constipation. To understanding of the effects of this fiber in dogs, two experiments were conducted. The first evaluated in healthy dogs a diet supplementation with 0%, 2% and 4% of ground whole psyllium seeds (as-fed basis). Eight adult Beagle dogs were used. They received the experimental diets for eight days. A linear increase of faecal moisture was verified with the addition of psyllium (R²=0.54 and P=0.0012), with no alteration on faecal score or number of defecations per day. The second experiment included 24 dogs with constipation. The dogs received a diet supplemented with 2% of psyllium as part of the treatment, and the owners were invited to answer a questionnaire. Nineteen (79.2%) owners reported that their dog had an easier defecation process during supplementation. Fifteen (62.5%) reported that the animals´ faeces, which were dry or hard at the start, became normal or pasty after psyllium consumption. The results confirmed a laxative effect of psyllium in dogs, which was already reported in human medicine, supporting the use of this fiber in the clinical management of diseases that cause constipation in dog.

O quilotórax corresponde ao acúmulo de fluido linfático em um ou em ambos os espaços pleurais, resultante do extravasamento de linfa do ducto torácico ou de uma de suas divisões principais. Este pode estar associado à ascite quilosa em pacientes com distúrbios linfáticos sistêmicos, como na linfangiectasia, em decorrência de defeitos no transporte linfático-venoso do quilo da cavidade torácica para a circulação sistêmica. A linfangiectasia intestinal é um distúrbio obstrutivo que envolve o sistema linfático do órgão e revela-se como a causa mais comum de enteropatias associadas à má absorção e perda de proteínas em cães. São apresentados no presente relato o controle clínico com o uso de dieta caseira com baixa gordura e a quantificação da função digestiva, por meio da determinação da digestibilidade do alimento, em um cão acometido por quilotórax secundário à linfangiectasia intestinal. A dieta caseira incluiu arroz, peito de frango, cenoura, carbonato de cálcio, levedura de cerveja, suplemento vitamínico e mineral e sal. O ensaio de digestibilidade foi conduzido pelo método de coleta total de fezes. A dieta caseira foi eficaz em interromper o acúmulo de efusão quilosa torácica, restabelecer as concentrações de proteína total e albumina e promover ganho de peso no paciente. Os resultados da digestibilidade demonstraram menor aproveitamento de todos os nutrientes no cão com linfangiectasia em relação ao controle sadio.

Chylothorax corresponds to accumulation of lymphatic fluid in one or both pleural spaces, resulting from the leak of thoracic duct or of one of their main divisions. This can be associated to chylous ascites in patients with systemic lymphatic disturbances, as in lymphangiectasia, due to defects in the lymphatic-veined transport of chylo from thoracic cavity to systemic circulation. Intestinal lymphangiectasia is an obstructive disturbance that involves lymphatic system of gastrintestinal tract and it’s the more common cause of enteropathies associated to reduced-absorption and protein loss in dogs. A clinical management of a dog assaulted by chylothorax secondary to intestinal lymphangiectasia is described. A homemade low fat diet was used, and the quantification of digestive function, through the determination of diet’s digestibility, was performed. The homemade diet included rice, chicken chest, carrot, calcium carbonate, yeast, vitamin and mineral supplement and salt. The digestibility assay was carried out by total feces collection method. Homemade diet was efficient in stop recurrence of chylous thoracic effusion accumulation, recovery of serum concentrations of total protein and albumin, and promotes weight gain. Compared to the healthy control dog, animal with lymphangiectasia showed reduced digestibility of all analyzed nutrients.

Resumo Com o objetivo de contribuir nas investigações sobre reúso agrícola, avaliou-se o impacto da aplicação de esgoto tratado no metabolismo microbiano de um solo sob pastagem (capim-Bermuda), em Lins/SP. Em um delineamento experimental em blocos, com 6 tratamentos e 4 repetições: SI (controle), A100 (água potável e adição de 520 kg ha-1 ano-1 de nitrogênio (N), E0, E33, E66 e E100 (irrigação com esgoto tratado e adição de 0, 172 , 343 e 520 kg ha-1 ano-1 de N), os indicadores qCO2, e Cmic:Corg foram determinados na estação seca (2004) e chuvosa (2005). Valores de qCO2 acima de 2 e valores de Cmic:Corg abaixo de 2% podem ser considerados críticos em termos de qualidade de solo. Os resultados mostraram aumentos de qCO2 ao longo do manejo, na estação seca mas não na chuvosa, indicando ativação metabólica pela umidade somada ao aporte de N. Não houve variação significativa de Cmic:Corg entre os tratamentos, ao longo dos manejos e do tempo, indicando boa resiliência da microbiota ao impacto agrícola.

Abstract The impact of treated wastewater application was evaluated in microbial metabolismo of a soil under pasture (Bermuda grass), in Lins/São Paulo State aiming to contribute to investigations on agricultural reuse. In an experimental design in blocks, with 6 treatments and 4 replicates: SI (control), A100 (drinkable water and addition of 520 kg ha-1 year-1 of nitrogen (N), E0, E33, E66 and E100 (treated wastewater irrigation and addition of 0, 172, 343 and 520 kg ha-1 year-1 of N), the indicators qCO2, and Cmic:Corg were determined in dry (2004) and rainy season (2005). Values of qCO2 above 2 and values of Cmic:Corg below 2% can be considered critical regarding soil quality. The results showed qCO2 increases along the crop management, in dry but not in the rainy season, indicating metabolic activation by moisture added to the N contribution. There was no significant Cmic:Corg variation among the treatments, along crop management and seasons, indicating good microorganisms resistance to agricultural impact.

A composição isotópica do carbono (delta13C) foi utilizada na determinação da origem botânica (C3 x C4) de amostras de café, vinho, cerveja e vodka, de diferentes marcas e procedências, comercializadas no Brasil. Dentre as marcas de café analisadas, apenas uma apresentou um elevado percentual de plantas C4 em sua composição, evidenciado pelo valor de delta13C (-16,2‰). Os valores de delta13C das amostras de vinhos brasileiros, variaram entre -25,1 e -17,1‰, indicando a presença de carbono de origem C4 nas amostras que tiveram os maiores valores de delta13C. Duas marcas de vinhos importados, por sua vez, apresentaram delta13C característico de planta C3 (-27,1 e -26,3‰). Os valores de delta13C das vodkas importadas variaram entre -26,4 e -23,9‰, e as brasileiras entre -12,8 e -11,8‰, excetuando-se uma marca que apresentou valor -23,1‰. As marcas de cervejas importadas, em sua maioria, apresentaram valores mais negativos (-27,3 a -20,7‰) que as nacionais (-25,9 a -18,4‰). Estes resultados evidenciam a eficiência desta metodologia na determinação da origem do C e percentual de mistura destas bebidas.

We used the carbon isotopic composition (delta13C) to determine the botanical origin (whether C3 or C4) of coffee, wine, beer and vodka samples from different brands and origins commercialized in Brazil. Only one coffee sample showed a delta13C typical of a mixture with C4 plants (delta13C -16.2‰). The Brazilian wine samples varied from delta13C -25.1 to -18.6‰, indicating the presence of carbon from C4 plants in samples with greater values, while the imported wine showed delta13C characteristic of C3 plants (-27.1 and -26.3‰). Imported vodka also showed delta13C typical of C3 plants (-26.4 and -23.9‰), while Brazilian counterparts were typically made from C4 plants (-12.8 to -11.8‰), except for one sample (23,1‰). Most of the imported beers showed more negative d13C (-27.3 to -20.7‰) than did the Brazilian beers (-25.9 to -18.4‰). These results demonstrate the method's efficiency for tracing the carbon origin and determining the extent of blending in beverages.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da compactação do solo na anatomia da raiz e no desenvolvimento de duas cultivares de soja (Glycine max (L.) Merrill), IAC-8 e IAC-14, em vasos. O solo utilizado foi um Latossolo Roxo, tirado da camada superficial (0-200 mm). Os níveis de compactação consistiram de 0,95 (controle), 1,20, 1,35 e 1,50 kg L-1, e foram obtidos pela compactação de determinada massa de solo por prensa hidráulica, em cilindros de ferro. A compactação do solo não afetou a estrutura anatômica da raiz, em nenhuma das duas cultivares. Na cultivar IAC-8, o número de folhas, a altura das plantas e o peso da matéria seca da raiz e do caule diminuíram com o aumento da densidade do solo, e o comprimento da raiz aumentou. Na cultivar IAC-14, o número de folhas, a área foliar, o número de vagens, a altura das plantas, o peso da matéria seca da raiz, do caule e das folhas foram diminuindo à medida que aumentava a densidade do solo, embora nas densidades intermediárias (1,20 e 1,35) se tenha notado uma tendência de aumento naquelas variáveis. A produção de soja não foi afetada pela compactação do solo, com exceção do número de vagens da cultivar IAC-14, que apresentou diferenças em razão do tratamento. Os resultados sugerem que as duas cultivares podem ser bem adaptadas a solos compactados, nos níveis analisados.

The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of soil compaction on the root anatomy and plant development of two soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) cultivars, IAC-8 and IAC-14, in pots. A clayey soil collected, from a superficial (0-200 mm) layer was used. The compaction levels consisted of 0.95 (control), 1.20, 1.35 and 1.50 kg L-1, which were obtained by compaction of some soil mass with a hydraulic press inside of iron cylinders. The soil compaction did not affect the anatomic structure of the roots, in any of the two cultivars. In the IAC-8, the leaf number, plant height and the dry matter of roots and stem decreased with the increase of soil density, and the root length was increased. In the IAC-14, the leaf number, foliar area, pod number, plant height, and weight of the dry matter of roots, stem and leaves decreased as the soil density increased, except for the intermediate densities (1.20 and 1.35), in which a trend to increase was observed in these variables. The soybean production was not affected by soil compaction, except for pod number in IAC-14, which showed differences as a function of the treatment. The results suggest that both cultivars can be well adapted to compacted soils in the analysed levels of compaction.

O conhecimento das possíveis alterações no comportamento de cultivares de girassol, semeados em diferentes épocas, é essencial para a escolha do momento mais adequado para a semeadura. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar o efeito da época de cultivo sobre alguns caracteres morfológicos e fisiológicos e sobre o rendimento de três cultivares de girassol semeados em doze épocas distintas. O experimento foi conduzido em Latossolo Vermelho, na Estação Experimental de Monte Alegre do Sul (SP), pertencente ao Instituto Agronômico. Utilizaram-se as populações IAC-Anhandy e VNIIMK e o híbrido Contisol 621 no delineamento com parcelas subdivididas, incluindo época de semeadura nas parcelas e cultivares na subparcela, com quatro repetições. As semeaduras foram realizadas, mensalmente, entre janeiro e dezembro de 1989. As amostragens foram feitas na fase R5.5, correspondente a 50% de florescimento para o índice de área foliar (IAF), e na maturação fisiológica (R5.9) para os demais parâmetros. Houve interação significativa entre época e cultivar para todos os caracteres avaliados, destacando-se a importância de se conhecer a resposta do cultivar a diferentes ambientes. Em termos de rendimento de grãos e fitomassa, IAC-Anhandy apresentou melhores resultados na semeadura de janeiro, enquanto VNIIMK foi melhor em agosto e Contisol 621, em junho. O híbrido Contisol 621 apresentou produção de fitomassa inferior e um índice de colheita ligeiramente superior às duas populações analisadas.

The knowledge of possible changes in sunflower cultivars due to different sowing dates is very important for sunflower cultivation. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of sowing date on some physiological characteristics, dry matter and grain yield of three sunflower cultivars sowed in twelve consecutive sowing dates ranging from January to December, 1989. The study was carried out in a field experiment, in the IAC Experimental Station of Monte Alegre do Sul (Latitude: 22°41’S; Longitude: 46°43’W; Altitude: 777 m), Brazil. The genotypes used were the varieties IAC-Anhandy and VNIIMK 8931, and the hybrid Contisol 621, in a split-plot design with sowing dates and cultivars, with four replications. The evaluations were done at phenostage R5.5, corresponding to 50% of flowering for leaf area index (LAI) and at physiological maturity (R5.9) for the remaining data. There was a significant interaction between sowing date and cultivar for all the studied characteristics, pointing out the importance of the knowledge of cultivar response to different behaviour. The highest total dry matter(TDM) and grain yield(GDM) were observed in the sowing date of January for IAC-Anhandy; June for Contisol 621, and in July for dry matter and August for grain yield in the case of VNIIMK. Contisol 621 presented less dry matter yield but with a better efficiency due to a slightly higher harvest index in comparison with the two populations.

Um experimento em vasos foi instalado em casa de vegetação com o objetivo de estudar a resposta do feijoeiro à aplicação de boro (B) em solo com baixa disponibilidade desse nutriente. Os tratamentos consistiram na aplicação de doses correspondentes a 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 e 16 kg.ha-1 de B, na forma de bórax. Dois ensaios foram desenvolvidos, sendo o primeiro no inverno (junho a julho) e o outro na primavera (setembro a outubro). No ensaio do inverno, foi observada a deficiência de B, apenas na testemunha, fato comprovado pela análise de tecidos. Nos demais tratamentos não apareceram sintomas de deficiência e os teores do elemento na parte aérea das plantas foram considerados adequados. No ensaio de primavera, não foi observada deficiência visual de B, mesmo na testemunha. Em ambos os ensaios, aplicações superiores a 2 kg.ha-1 de B proporcionaram teores muito elevados do elemento nas plantas (138 a 710 mg.kg-1). Os dados sugerem que a deficiência é mais relevante no inverno e que o excesso é prejudicial, em qualquer época, ocasionando toxicidade.

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of boron in dry bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in pots. The treatments consisted of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 kg.ha-1 of boron in the form of borax. Two identical experiments were carried out during the winter (June/July) and the spring (September/October) seasons. In the winter experiment, the boron deficiency symptoms were shown only by the control plants. In those conditions, the high concentrations of Ca and Mg and the low temperatures affected the boron absorption of the plants. The application of 1 kg.ha-1 of boron was sufficient to reduce the visible symptoms of B deficiency, and increased the dry weight of the shoots. At the rate of the 2 kg.ha-1 B or above there was excess of boron in the dry matter of the shoots. In the spring experiment there was no deficiency symptoms in the plants and the boron concentration was adequate in the shoots. Also, the application of 2 kg.ha-1 of B or more increased the B concentration to excess. The results suggest that boron deficiency is relevant only in the winter and that excess of boron is a problem, causing toxicity, independent of the season.

Estudou-se o efeito da deficiência hídrica em diferentes estádios do cultivar precoce de soja Paraná. As plantas foram cultivadas em casa de vegetação, em solução nutritiva de Hoagland. A deficiência hídrica foi simulada pela adição de polietilenoglicol (PEG) 6% na solução nutritiva, nos seguintes estádios: vegetativo, florescimento e enchimento do grão. Os resultados mostraram que: (1) a deficiência hídrica nos três estádios diminuiu a produção e o número de vagens e de grãos em relação à testemunha; (2) no período do enchimento do grão diminuiu o peso do grão e a produção, com relação ao estádio vegetativo. Concluiu-se que a deficiência foi mais prejudicial nos estádios reprodutivos, devido à diminuição da produção de grãos.

A greenhouse experiment was carried out to study the effect of simulated water stress during different growth stages on the yield of the early soybean cultivars Paraná, in Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The water stress was simulated by the addition of PEG (polyetilenoglycol) to the Hoagland nutrient solution where the plants were cultivated, up to three different stages: vegetative period, flowering period and pod filling period. It was observed that water stress during the three periods reduced the grain yield, the seed weight and the seed number. The water stress was more damaging during the reproductive stages for the cultivars studied since it reduced the grain yield.

Calcium chloride at 1% was sprayed on the foliage of potted soybean plants of the Santa Rosa cultivar as a single application at 20, 40 or 60 days after germination or combined as two or three applications at the same dates. A single spray at 40 or 60 days after germination (10 days prior to or 10 days after full blooming) gave the best response. The number of pods per plant was increased by 16-20% and the soybean yield was increased by about 10%.
